Work Permit for the USA

Working for the international students, enrolled in the US Varsities is not mandatory, but it is the opportunity offered to the students as a choice. Students are often encouraged to choose the trade within the campus, or off the campus, but near to the college or the university campus. Jobs, which require long hours of traveling are not suited for the students and thereforeinternational students, are not recommended for these kinds of jobs.

International students need to apply for the work permit after they have received the formal approval from the US University, and have been approved to secure admission in their course of study.

Student Work Permit in the United States

As an undergraduate or postgraduate international student enrolled in the US varsity, employment is on part-time basis for a maximum of 20 hours every week. In the first year of study, students only work on-campus, like gym, cafeteria, bookstore, or library. Working for 10 to 15 hours per week is sufficient to cover books and personal expenses.

After completion of the first year of education in the USA, you have to apply for position as a residential assistant (RA). An RA oversees student housing, serving as single contact resource to manage the concern of the students. RA is compensated by free accommodation and a meal plan and/or in some cases a small salary. Besides being an RA, students who successfully completed their first year of study, become eligible for Curricular Practical Training, giving the students to work in the capacity of intern or in a work/study program off-campus, maximizing to 20 hours every week.

Spouse Visa and Work Permit

  • F-1 Student Visa – Married students applying for the study in any of the US varsity through the F1 student visa cannot make their spouses work in part time or full time employment. The international student on F-1 Visa is bound to study in the academic institution, through which he or she has been granted the visa. J-1 students (studying on scholarship, fellowship or assistantship) are naturally eligible for the on-campus employment. The students on summer work/travel exchange program are eligible for the off-campus employment.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

After completion of graduation and consummation of final year examination, the students can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT), giving the opportunity to work in the United States for 1 year. An OPT is likely to get an extension, if the employer considers the student and his/her work of exceptional importance for the company.
